Né à Fockbury, dans le Worcestershire, le 26 mars 1859.

Formé au St John's College d'Oxford (1877-1882), A. E. Housman fut avant tout un universitaire. Il a beaucoup étudié, traduit et enseigné les auteurs grecs et latins (Euripide, Eschyle, Sophocle, Horace, Properce, Ovide...). En 1911, il obtient un poste de professeur au Trinity College de Cambridge, où il enseignera jusqu'à sa mort.

Sa carrière de poète consiste essentiellement en deux recueils : A Shropshire Lad, publié à compte d'auteur en 1896, et Last Poems (1922).

A. E. Housman est mort à Cambridge le 30 avril 1936. Son frère, le dramaturge Laurence Housman (qui est notamment l'auteur d'une biographie théâtrale de la reine Victoria : Victoria Regina), s'est alors occupé d'éditer les poèmes posthumes (More Poems et Additional Poems) et le recueil Collected Poems (1939).

Musique

Les poèmes de Housman ont inspiré de nombreux compositeurs au XXe siècle, et encore de nos jours. En voici la plupart.

Arthur Somervell (1863-1937). Le premier auteur d'un cycle de mélodies consacré aux poèmes de Housman (un certain Henry Havelock Ettrick aurait déjà eu l'intention d'adapter un poème en 1903, selon la correspondance du poète, mais on n'en sait pas plus) :

Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972) [US] : "Into My Heart" (1915, in 2 Songs op. 54, no 1, l'autre texte étant d'Alice Meynell). L'une des premières adaptations américaines, dès années 1910. Enr. Marta Arapis-Effie Agrafioti live 2008.

Charles Fonteyn Manney (1872-1951) [US]. Le premier à mettre en musique A Shropshire Lad en Amérique :

• 1911 A Shropshire lad, cycle de 6 mélodies : "Youth" ("Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry") ; "Heart wounds" ("When I Was One-and-Twenty") ; "Exile" ("White in the Moon the Long Road Lies") ; "Home-longing" ("Into My Heart an Air that Kills") ; "Grief" ("With Rue My Heart Is Laden") ; "Disillusion" ("Think No More").
  

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) fait partie des premiers compositeurs à avoir adapté les poèmes du Shrophshire Lad, dès les années 1900, et son cycle accompagné d'un quintette avec piano demeure l'un des plus originaux, avec une musique dramatique et extrêmement évocatrice :

• 1909 On Wenlock Edge, 6 mélodies pour ténor, quatuor à cordes et piano : "On Wenlock Edge" ; "From Far, from Eve and Morning" ; "Is My Team Ploughing" ; "Oh, When I Was in Love with You" ; "Bredon Hill" ; "Clun".
  Dès 1917, on peut entendre un enregistrement par Gervase Elwes et le London Quartet, aujourd'hui fort bien restauré. Pears et Britten ont enregistré le cycle en juillet 1945, avec le quatuor Zorian ; puis George Maran avec le London Quartet et Ivor Newton en 1955 ; John Cameron etc. P1956. En stéréo : Ian Partridge est très convaincant en 1970 ; Martyn Hill, Graham Johnson etc. P1981 ; Adrian Thompson en 1989 ; Anthony Rolfe Johnson etc. P1996c ; John Mark Ainsley en 1999 ; Andrew Kennedy en 2007 avec le quatuor Dante et Simon Crawford-Phillips ; Mark Padmore et le Schubert Ensemble en 2007 ; James Gilchrist P2007 avec le quatuor Fitzwilliam et Anna Tilbrook ; Robert Wagner avec Ilse Schumann et le Color Quartet P2012.
  Orchestré par le compositeur en 1924. Enregistrements : Gerald English avec le West Australian SO et David Measham en 1979 ; Robert Tear avec Birmingham et Rattle dans un magnifique enregistrement de 1983 ; et, encore mieux, Ian Bostridge avec le LPO et Haitink en 1997, d'une clarté extraordinaire.

Par ailleurs, la chanteuse et violoniste texane Eden MacAdam-Somer a arrangé le cycle pour le jouer toute seule (P1995) : le résultat est remarquable. Enfin, il existe aussi un curieux arrangement pour baryton et alto, à écouter avec modération (Hartmut Schulz & Maurizio Barbetti, P2017).
  

         

Daniel Gregory Mason (1873-1953) [US]

• 1923 Songs of the countryside op. 23, pour soprano et baryton, chœur et orchestre. Les symphonies de Mason ont été gravée sur disque dès les années 1930 (par Barbirolli et par Bruno Walter), mais ce cycle de grande envergure ne semble pas avoir fait l'objet d'un enregistrement.
  

Hugh S. Roberton (1874-1952) : "Bredon Hill", pour choeur mixte SATB (1942 ?). Roberton était un chef de chœur écossais, fondateur et directeur du Glasgow Orpheus Choir. Son arrangement de Housman demeure mystérieux.

Graham Peel (1877-1937)

• 1910 4 Songs of 'A Shropshire Lad' : "Reveille" ; "When the lad for longing sighs" ; "Loveliest of trees" ; "Say, lad, have you things to do?".
  Les 2 premières mélodies du cycle ont été enregistrées par Graham Trew & Roger Vignoles en 1979.
  
• "Bredon Hill" (1911). Graham Trew & Roger Vignoles 1979 ; Thomas Allen & Geoffrey Parsons P1990 ; Nick Pepin & June Clark P2004.
  Il existe une version orchestrale de ce "Bredon Hill" (Frederick Harvey, Philharmonia Orchestra, George Weldon P1966). On peut l'entendre aussi accompagné à la guitare.
  
• "The street sounds to the soldiers" (1911).
  

Balfour Gardiner (1877-1950) : "Leave your home behind, lad" ; "When I was one-and-twenty". Il ne reste guère de ce Gardiner qu'un "Evening Hymn" de 1908 (et un petit-neveu : John Eliot) ; le reste est tombé dans l'oubli. Il a cessé de composer en 1925.

John Ireland (1879-1962)
